Steve Irwin Day: Bindi Irwin Pays Emotional Tribute To Late Father

Today is Steve Irwin day. It's the day we all remember the Crocodile Hunter, who died in September 2006 when a stingray's barb pierced his heart while filming an underwater scene.

The TV presenter's death was a massive shock 11 years ago as he was a TV legend with his no-shits-given attitude towards getting up close and personal with animals from which most of us would run a fucking mile. Fancy getting chased by a Komodo Dragon? Nah, didn't think so.

Bindi wrote in the post: "November 15. Steve Irwin Day. Today we remember all that Dad achieved for wildlife and wild places around the world. He taught me that we must all treat animals the way we wish to be treated.

"I think that his advice applies to both animals and people. In order to protect our planet, we must first learn to be kind in every part of life. If we are able to show kindness for each other we can be kind to our wildlife and in turn, our planet.

"I strive to encourage people to remember that conservation is not only about the cute and cuddly creatures, but also our crocodiles, snakes and sharks. We are all connected in some way."

Steve's widow, Terri, Bindi and teenage son Robert will be paying their respects to their beloved husband and father at Australia Zoo.

They'll also be returning to Animal Planet, with the family and network said to be chatting over a few ideas, according to the network's general manager, Patrice Andrews.

The Irwin family have also dedicated themselves to maintaining the momentum of a lot of Steve's conservation projects to pay tribute to his life.

"Grief is never something you get over," said Terri. "It's something that walks beside you every day.

"And if you can learn how to manage it and honour the person that you miss, you can take something that is incredibly sad and have some form of positivity. That's kind of what we decided to do with Steve."

So everyone will be paying tribute to Steve today and hopefully taking the important message of caring for animals and making efforts to help with conservation.
